Terms of service
Plain-English terms.
Who you are dealing with
CaringDictate is made and sold by Broadfield Networks LLC, a Wyoming limited liability company. In these terms, "we", "us", and "our" mean Broadfield Networks LLC, and "you" means the person installing or using the software. By downloading, installing, or using CaringDictate, you agree to what follows.
These terms cover both the free trial and a purchased licence. If you need a postal address for a formal notice, email legal@caringdictate.com and we will provide one.
The free trial
CaringDictate is free to download and try for 7 days. There is no sign-up and no card required. The trial is the complete application, not a cut-down version — the point is that you find out whether it genuinely helps before any money changes hands. When the 7 days are up, dictation stops until you enter a licence key. Nothing is charged automatically, ever, because we never took a payment method from you in the first place.
What you are buying
A CaringDictate licence is a one-time purchase of a licence to use the CaringDictate Windows application. The licence is for one person and may be used on up to three of that person's own computers. It includes free updates: every 3.x feature update is included, with a minimum of 24 months of updates from your purchase, plus security and critical-compatibility fixes beyond that. Any future major upgrade (for example a version 4) is optional and offered to existing licence holders at a discount.
How long the licence lasts
Forever, on the version of the software available at the time of your purchase, together with the 3.x updates and fixes described above. The version you bought keeps working regardless of any later paid upgrade. If we ever cease operations, we commit to releasing the last version publicly so that existing licence holders keep a working copy.
Permitted use
You may:
- Use CaringDictate on up to three of your own personal computers
- Use CaringDictate for any lawful purpose — personal, professional, creative, medical
- Modify your local CaringDictate configuration freely (settings, dictionaries, custom phrases)
- Make backup copies of the installer for personal use
You may not:
- Distribute, sell, rent, or sublicense CaringDictate to others, or share your licence key
- Use CaringDictate in violation of any applicable law, including laws about recording other people
- Reverse-engineer the software or its licence validation for the purpose of circumventing it
- Use CaringDictate to transcribe audio you have no right to transcribe (unusual, since CaringDictate is built for interactive dictation rather than batch transcription, but we mention it for clarity)
What you own
The text you produce using CaringDictate is yours. Your licence gives us no rights over what you write with it. We do not claim ownership of, a licence to, or any interest in the content you dictate — and since your words never reach us, we could not act on such a claim even if we wanted to.
The CaringDictate software itself remains our property, licensed to you on the terms above.
About the recognition technology
CaringDictate includes and can download open-source speech recognition models and libraries that remain the property of their respective owners. The principal ones are:
- The OpenAI Whisper model family, and Distil-Whisper, under the MIT License
- NVIDIA Parakeet-TDT 0.6B (v2 English, v3 multilingual), (c) NVIDIA Corporation, under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence, re-hosted by us in ONNX form. No endorsement by NVIDIA is implied.
- SenseVoice-Small and the CT-Transformer punctuation model, (c) Alibaba Group / FunASR, under the FunASR Model Open Source License v1.1, with their model names retained as that licence requires
- Moonshine Base, (c) Useful Sensors Inc., and Silero VAD, under the MIT License
- sherpa-onnx and ONNX Runtime, and the other libraries the app is built on, under the Apache License 2.0 and the MIT License respectively
Each component is used under its own licence, and those licences continue to govern that component. The complete notices, with full licence texts, ship with the application and can be opened from Settings → About → Licences.
Accuracy, and what CaringDictate is not
CaringDictate is dictation software. It is not a medical device, it is not assistive technology certified under any standard, and it does not diagnose, treat, or manage any condition. We describe who it helps because that is who we built it for — not as a clinical claim.
No speech recognition is perfect. Accuracy varies with your microphone, your surroundings, your accent, your voice on any given day, and the model you have chosen. Any accuracy figures we publish are measured on standard benchmarks and are not a promise about your results. Please read anything important before you send it, and do not rely on CaringDictate as the only check on text where a mistake would be costly or unsafe.
Updates and changes
We may update CaringDictate from time to time. Updates may include new features, improved recognition, additional speech models, bug fixes, and compatibility work for new Windows releases. All updates are included free of charge with your licence, on the terms above.
We will not introduce a subscription requirement for existing licence holders. Future versions may add premium tiers, but the functionality you purchased stays included in your licence.
Refunds
See our refund policy. Short version: 30-day no-questions-asked refund. Email help@caringdictate.com.
Limitation of liability
CaringDictate is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, either express or implied. We do not warrant that the software will meet your specific requirements, that it will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that every error will be corrected.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, in no event shall Broadfield Networks LLC be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to loss of profits, data, or use, arising out of or in connection with this software.
Our total liability to you for any claim arising from this software shall not exceed the amount you paid for your CaringDictate licence ($49 in most cases).
Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or limitations of liability, so parts of the above may not apply to you. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited. The purpose of these limits is not to escape responsibility — we stand behind the software and answer support requests personally — but to provide the standard legal protection all software requires.
If we discontinue the product
If CaringDictate ever ceases active development, whether through acquisition, closure, or any other reason, we commit to three things:
- Releasing the final version publicly so existing licence holders keep a working copy
- Giving reasonable notice — typically 12 months — before any shutdown that would affect licence validation
- Providing a way for existing customers to keep using the software if our licence servers are ever retired
We make this commitment because many of the people who use CaringDictate depend on it for daily communication. We will not strand them.
Privacy
See our privacy policy. The architectural commitment to local processing — speech recognition runs on your own computer — is permanent.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Wyoming, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules, and the courts of that jurisdiction have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute. If you are a consumer somewhere with stronger consumer protection law — for example in the EU, the UK, or various US states — that law applies to the extent it gives you stronger rights than these terms, and this clause does not deprive you of the right to bring proceedings where you live.
If part of these terms does not hold up
If any provision of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest stays in force and the unenforceable part is applied as closely to its original intent as the law allows.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. Material changes will be communicated to licence holders by email and noted on this page. Continued use of CaringDictate after an update means you accept the new terms. The version of these terms in force when you bought your licence continues to govern that purchase.
