Is essential tremor really a perfect match for voice typing?
About as perfect as any condition gets. Essential tremor by definition affects voluntary movement (typing is voluntary) but does not affect speech production. Almost no other condition has such a clean separation — for most users with ET, voice typing replaces the keyboard entirely with no compromises. The only thing to be aware of is that some ET medications (notably primidone) can occasionally affect voice projection, in which case a USB headset microphone is worth the $20 investment.
Will it work better than Microsoft Voice Access?
Yes, for typing specifically. Microsoft Voice Access on Windows 11 is designed for system control ("open Chrome", "click cancel") and is widely reported as 'excruciatingly slow' for actual dictation. CaringDictate is built for dictation: you press a hotkey, talk, and the words appear instantly in whatever text field you were in. The accuracy is also significantly better — CaringDictate uses Whisper Large v3 Turbo, the same engine major transcription services use, with 96-97% accuracy on clear English.
Will my tremor affect using a hotkey?
For most ET users, pressing a single key once is manageable — and CaringDictate lets you assign the hotkey to any key, including ones that are easier to hit (like Caps Lock, or a mouse button, or even a foot pedal mapped through AutoHotkey). You can also configure CaringDictate to require a press-and-hold instead of a press-once, if that suits your hands better.
Are there free options I should try first?
Honestly: yes, briefly. Try Apple Dictation if you have a Mac, or Microsoft Voice Access on Windows 11, or Google Docs Voice Typing.
