What the price difference actually buys
Both are one-time purchases, and Dragon costs considerably more. It is worth being clear about what that difference pays for, because it is not nothing.
- Custom voice commands. Dragon lets you build your own spoken shortcuts and control applications by voice. We have none of this.
- Vocabulary and voice training. Dragon learns your specialist terms and adapts to how you speak, and keeps what it learns. We offer a simple word list and nothing more.
- Transcribing recorded audio. Dragon can turn an existing recording into text. CaringDictate only handles live dictation.
- Depth generally. Two decades of refinement for professional users, and a support and reseller network to go with it.
If any of those matter to you, Dragon is straightforwardly the right purchase and the extra cost is buying real capability. Nuance does not list a price on its product page and resellers discount, so ask them what it costs for you rather than relying on a figure you read somewhere.
CaringDictate makes sense in one situation: you want to talk and see the words appear, you do not need any of the above, and the difference in price matters to your household.
What about accuracy? An honest answer.
Dragon has been the reference point for dictation accuracy for a very long time, and a Dragon profile that has been trained on your voice and your vocabulary is a formidable thing. On specialised professional terminology — medical, legal, technical — that training is an advantage we make no attempt to match.
What has changed is the starting point. Recognition models released in the last few years — including OpenAI's Whisper family, which CaringDictate uses — perform well on clear speech with no per-user training at all. There is no enrollment session; you install it, pick a talk button, and speak.
For a trained Dragon user with a good microphone, Dragon still has the advantage on specialised terminology it has been taught. For general writing, and particularly for people who do not want to spend an afternoon training a voice profile, the modern engines are a practical match. Our recommendation
If you can afford Dragon Professional, buy Dragon Professional. It is the more capable product, it is actively sold and supported, and you will not outgrow it. That is the honest answer and we would rather give it to you than win a sale we should not have.
If you already have Dragon and it works: keep it. There is no reason to change a setup you are happy with, and a trained profile represents real time invested that does not transfer.
If you need custom voice commands, vocabulary training, or transcription of recorded audio: Dragon is the only one of the two that does these at all. Please do not buy ours expecting them.
If you are a clinician: your hospital most likely licenses one of the Dragon Medical products, which are built for clinical documentation. CaringDictate is not built for that workflow and should not be used for it.

The product carried on and is going strong — Dragon Professional v16 arrived in February 2023, and Nuance lists v16.1 as the current version today, upgrading earlier v14, v15 and v16 installations to it automatically. Yes. Nuance lists Dragon Professional v16 as optimised for Windows 11 and fully compatible with Windows 10, and it has been kept current — the release notes list v16.1, and Dragon upgrades earlier v14, v15 and v16 installations to it automatically. If you are still running the older v14 or v15 lines, those reached end of support (v14 in September 2023) and no longer receive updates, so moving to v16 is the sensible step.
