Apple Dictation falls down in three predictable ways. First, it does not exist on Windows — and the majority of elderly users in the United States run Windows. Second, it noticeably degrades on non-standard speech. Heavy accents, slowed speech, soft voices from age or medication, mild dysarthria from any neurological condition — these all cut Apple's accuracy hard. Third, the privacy model varies by device: newer Macs process on-device, but older iPhones and older Macs send audio to Apple's servers, which matters for medical and personal writing.
