Is Apple Dictation free?
Yes, it is built into macOS and iOS at no charge, and on modern Apple hardware it processes speech on-device. For Mac owners with straightforward needs it is genuinely good — that is the honest answer.
What is the Windows equivalent of Apple Dictation?
Windows has its own built-in voice typing — press Windows key + H in any text box — and Windows 11 also includes Voice Access, which adds full voice control of the PC and which Microsoft say works without an internet connection. If you use both a Mac and a Windows PC: there is no need to choose. Apple Dictation on the Mac, CaringDictate on the PC.
If you want dictation that runs on your own computer: CaringDictate does its speech recognition locally. Microphone audio is held in memory while you dictate and then discarded, rather than saved as an audio file or uploaded. You can see it working without a connection by turning off the Wi-Fi and dictating a paragraph. Apple also let Mac users check, under Keyboard settings, whether their own dictation is being processed on-device.
