Will voice typing work as my MD progresses?
Voice typing tends to keep working as long as your speech does — and speech is typically preserved in most forms of MD even as limb muscles weaken significantly. The recognition engine itself does not change based on your progression.
My voice is getting weaker. Will it still recognize me?

A good USB headset microphone helps a lot — we recommend one for any user whose voice has reduced projection. Will this work for Duchenne, Becker, FSHD, myotonic, or other types of MD?
Yes — CaringDictate is not specific to any type of muscular dystrophy. What matters for voice typing is whether your speech is functional (most types preserve speech well into the disease) and whether you can trigger the hotkey somehow (which the configurable input system makes possible across a very wide range of physical abilities).
Can I use it from a wheelchair-mounted laptop?
Yes. CaringDictate runs on any Windows 10 or 11 laptop. We strongly recommend a USB or Bluetooth headset microphone over the built-in mic — wheelchair-mounted laptops are often a foot or more from your mouth, which reduces recognition accuracy. A basic $20 USB headset works very well.
Does the MDA or my MD clinic recommend voice typing?
The Muscular Dystrophy Association explicitly recommends voice-to-text software for the typing-fatigue problem that MD causes — though they typically recommend Dragon by name because Dragon was the dominant product for many years. Is this covered by insurance or MDA assistance programs?
CaringDictate is consumer software at $49 — it is not on any pre-approved assistive technology vendor list. The MDA and similar disease-specific charities sometimes have assistance programs that cover assistive software; the process is to ask. The receipt we email describes the purchase as assistive software (which is usually what these programs want to see). FSA and HSA purchases of assistive technology are often allowed; check with your plan.
