Will CaringDictate still work as my speech changes with ALS?
CaringDictate works best while your speech is still relatively clear. Many people with ALS keep usable speech for years into the disease — and during that window, voice typing fills the gap as hands and fingers get weaker. The recognition engine inside (Whisper Large v3 Turbo) was trained on a very wide range of voices and tolerates softer, slower, or slightly slurred speech better than older dictation tools. When eye-gaze AAC eventually becomes the right tool, CaringDictate has served its purpose. We do not pretend to replace specialized AAC devices for late-stage ALS.
Does it work from a hospital bed or recliner?
Yes. CaringDictate runs on any Windows 10 or 11 laptop. A USB or Bluetooth headset microphone is what most ALS users prefer — it picks up softer speech and reduces background noise. You do not have to sit at a desk. The hotkey can be triggered by a configurable mouse button, a keyboard key, or by single-switch software piped through a keyboard mapping.
My family member with ALS cannot click a hotkey button — can they still use this?
You can configure CaringDictate to use any single keyboard key (such as a large external accessibility key), any mouse button, or to toggle on and off with very short presses. For users who cannot reliably press a key, third-party switch interfaces (like the Tecla Shield, AbleNet switches, or a foot pedal mapped to a key via AutoHotkey) work with CaringDictate the same way they work with any Windows application.
Will it work alongside our existing ALS communication setup?
Yes. CaringDictate is a typing tool. It coexists with eye-gaze AAC, with Tobii Dynavox, with TD Snap, with Predictable, with Proloquo on a separate tablet. You can use voice typing for emails, Facebook posts, search bars, and Word documents on your main laptop, and continue using AAC for face-to-face conversation. Most families we have talked to use both.
Is the $49 really the only payment, even though ALS is progressive?
